The EU funded EARTH (Energy Aware Radio neTwork tecHnologies) research project has won the Future Internet Award of the European Union (EU) int he first half of 2012. The award was handed over at the closing event of the Future Internet Week held during the Danish EU Presidency in Aalborg on 11 May, 2012.

The National Innovation Office’s (NIH) scope of activities are going to broaden probably from spring as the Science and Technology Observatory starts its operation, Dr. György Mészáros, president of the NIH announced at the meeting of the Parliament’s Innovation and Development Committee on 28th March.

This Networking event will target a wide range of companies, universities and researchers from all over Europe interested in sharing new project ideas and finding collaboration within the upcoming calls in FP7.

The Dennis Gabor Association’s aim is to strengthen the scientific and social connections between Germany and Hungary. The organization wants to develop a forum to create connections in general and then to extend the created network to the field of science. The other aim of the Association is to elaborate new forms of cooperation which serve not only scientific but social goals as well. For example an educational programme is planned for Hungarian medical students who have to return back to Hungary at the end of the programme.

The fourth Future Internet Award competition is now open. This Award recognises excellence in innovation among Future Internet projects and initiatives from across Europe. The winner will receive a specially engraved Waterford crystal vase, as well as the opportunity to promote their work to a Europe-wide audience of industry, academic and public agency bodies

A meeting of the Planning Team was held within the framework of the EEA – Norwegian Financial Mechanism’s bilateral research cooperation programme at The National Innovation Office on 9 December 2011 with the participation of the Hungarian Academy of Science’s and the related ministers’ delegates.

The National Development Agency (NDA) has published its approval regarding submitted project proposals in the framework of the Hungarian-Indian Co-funding Cooperation Programme.

Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness. Running from 2014 to 2020 with an €80 billion budget, the EU’s new programme for research and innovation is part of the drive to create new growth and jobs in Europe.

Aloizio Mercadante, the Brazilian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation visited Dr. György Mészáros, President of the National Innovation Office on 18 November 2011. The Minister was honored to accept the invitation from a country, where the traditions of scientific research date back many centuries.

A day-long workshop jointly hosted by BGI and the National Innovation Office of the Government of Hungary was successfully held on 19th of October in Budapest. This workshop is a step towards a formal collaboration after the two parties signed a cooperation framework agreement on the establishment of the Central European center of BGI last month.

1200 members of the nanotechnology community from over 50 countries gathered in Budapest, Hungary, for three days of presentations, networking and inspiration during EuroNanoForum 2011. The event was supported by the European Commission and Hungarian National Innovation Fund, and was organised by the National Innovation Office in partnership with Spinverse under the auspices of the Hungarian Presidency.

The Hungarian Ministry for National Economy and the National Innovation Office together with the JRC organised a conference entitled Towards an Open and Competitive Economy: Examining the Roots of Innovation on 5 April 2011. This conference was held under the auspices of the Hungarian EU Presidency and took place in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest.

The week of 16-21 May 2011 will be devoted to future internet and high-tech innovation in Hungary where international experts will come together to discuss the economic and societal impacts of technological evolution and development trends in the EU member states. On this week Budapest will host the Future Internet Conference and Assembly and the ICT Proposers’ Day dedicated to international networking and seeking partners to form project consortia.

Under the aegis of the Hungarian EU Presidency, a high-level conference was held on the interim evaluation of the 7th Framework Programme in Budapest, on 24-25 February, 2011.The Conference was organized by the National Innovation Office with the support of the Ministry for National Economy. The Conference attracted more than 250 participants.

The ‘Future Internet Award’, supported and organised by the ceFIMS Coordination Action, is an opportunity for European national and regional Future Internet initiatives to promote their work. Initiatives can take the form of innovative products and services that will shape the Future Internet. The award will be awarded every six months to the initiative that is adjudged to have the greatest potential to advance the Future Internet and which provides an exemplar for innovate products/services.

EuroNanoForum 2011 takes place in Budapest from 30th May to 1st June 2011.

Based on Government Regulation 303/2010. (XII. 23.), with effect from 1 January 2011, the name of the National Office for Research and Technology changed to National Innovation Office.

On December 9, 2010 NKTH held a workshop for professionals with the goal to get an overview on international programmes and related Hungarian R&D activities aiming at the development of a new generation internet technology and network. At the event renowned Hungarian experts discussed the international efforts made on the research and development of the next generation internet network, paying special attention to the relevant R&D programmes and initiatives of the EU, and the actualities of Hungarian research projects on the subject.

Under the name „Science at the Service of Europe” a report was published about the activities for 2009 of the Research and Development DG of the European Commission.

EuroNanoForum is a biannual event organised within the framework of the Presidency of the European Union. EuroNanoForum 2011 will be the fifth event in this series, and will take place under the Hungarian Presidency at the Budapest Congress and World Trade Center from 30th May to 1st June 2011. EuroNanoForum 2011 has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 266810, and from the National Office for Research and Technology in Hungary.

Invited by the National Office for Research and Technology (NKTH), representatives of the ASPERA network (AStroParticle physics ERAnet – European Research Area network responsible for astroparticle physics) have conferred in Hungary. The main purpose of the initiative supported by EU is to join forces of the European funding agencies in astroparticle physics and develop a strategy for the future in this research field. The ASPERA network has prepared the European Strategy for Astroparticle Physics, which determines the most important research infrastructures needed in the area of astroparticle physics in Europe. The main objective of the ASPERA Hungarian National Day organized in Budapest on 15 October 2010 was to present the Hungarian science activities in astroparticle physics and the science funding system in Hungary to the other 21 partner funding agencies in the network. ASPERA is creating a roadmap for future directions in this research field and is identifying the large research infrastructure it will support in the near future, therefore it is important for Hungarian researchers to be informed about this decision making process and it is also imperative that the voice of the Hungarian research community be heard.

The European Commission DG Research, the National Office for Research and Technology and the INNOVA Észak-Alföld Regional Innovation Agency is organizing the FP7 Research Potential and Regions of Knowledge Infoday on the calls of 2011 and good practices of running projects.

A conference entitled “Researcher Mobility Forum 2010” will be held on 9 September in Budapest, Hungary. The conference will be held at the Novotel Budapest Danube (H-1027 Budapest, Bem rakpart 33-34.)

Dr. Gyula Csopaki, the President of NKTH renounced his office on 6th August, 2010.

The study was prepared by a consortium of Ernst&Young and GKI Economic Research Co., who were commissioned after proving to be the best in a public procurement procedure.

The National Office for Research and Technology hereby informs parties affected that from 17:00 on 29 June 2010 applications (either paper-based or electronical) for the proposal calls of the Research and Technology Innovation Fund (KTIA) will not be accepted for a temporary period by the Office or any of its representative organisations, i.e. the Hungarian Economic Development Centre Private Limited Company (MAG Zrt.), the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA), the Hungarian Science and Technology Foundation (TéT Alapítvány), and the Regional Development Agencies (RFÜ).

Preceding the EUREKA Ministerial Conference on 25th June, 2010 in Berlin, the EUREKA Innovation Award was presented to the Onom@Topic+ project, which was carried out with the active participation of Hungarian Compuworx Ltd. The project was realized within the EUREKA MEDEA+ (with the theme of microelectronics) cluster, focusing on the development of the European citizenship card system and mobile multimedia applications.
