The Regional University Center of Excellence in Environmental Industry Based on Natural Resources was founded on December 1st, 2005 with its seat in Gödöllõ at the Szent István University.

The Center of Excellence appropriates the scientific fundamentals and regional development of a new technology intensive sector: the environmental industry. Its objective is the integration of research and education potential in different areas of science in the region and thus the establishment of a cluster-based technological, scientific and innovation center that contributes to the balanced economic and social development of the region and the entire country directed towards sustainability.

The activity of the Center of Excellence complies with the regional development objectives and priorities of the government and the European Union, especially in the areas of environment management, quality of life, population support, competitiveness and income production. The development of new education, research, professional consultation and adult training functions are considered important through the establishment of national and international competitiveness that can offer solutions on international level to the requirements and challenges faced by the knowledge intensive institutions of higher education in the XXI. century.

Natural resources as renewable media represent great opportunities for the society to form an environment conscious energy saving way of life that can manage the existing resources. Environmental industry as the most important fundament of the Center of Excellence provides the scientific and experimental background to the realization of these goals.

Environmental industry is a new complex multidisciplinary direction that recently gained strategic importance. Activities involved or connected to environmental industry and scientific areas dealing with it are wide-spread and complex. Thus, it is not an established exact science, it is much more a user-oriented cooperative and multidisciplinary group of activities the primary objective of which is the discovery of phenomena and laws concerning natural resources and economic activities in secondary and tertiary sectors and composition of recommendations. Environmental industry and human quality of life are in strong connection with each other.

The most important factor of competitiveness and sustainable economic development is environment friendly, quality-oriented economic structure. Increasing effectiveness of utilization of natural resources, organization of industrial parks and facilities based on „industrial ecosystem”, eco-innovation and spreading environment conscious household activity reduce environmental load and improve competitiveness and the quality of life.

The mission of the Center of Excellence is the establishment and operation of a knowledge building, generating and transfer center that facilitates the appearance, development and utilization of intellectual values. This mission will be achieved by the establishment of an intellectual center where technologies, products and services connected to basic and applied research appear in a concentrated way. Another strategic objective is that gained new knowledge should be utilized as soon as possible in the form of innovative projects, thus, the goal of the center of excellence is not only the collection and transfer of knowledge but also the promotion of utilization of ideas, research results and other intellectual products.
