| Europe is vibrant, diverse, and rich in resources, and historically it has an extraordinary track record in social, political and scientific innovation. Yet, its competitive position on the global stage is fading. This is due in part to the impact of the recent financial crisis and the rapid economic growth in Asia. But it is also a result of the increasing need for innovations and innovative approaches to deal with the ‘grand challenges’ of today, including climate change, food security, demographic change. The future position and success of Europe internationally are rooted in its ability to develop innovations which will tackle these challenges and contribute to creating a competitive and growing economy. |

Over the past 25 years, EUREKA has been a pathfinder for the European Union, making an important contribution to supporting innovation in Europe, at times in partnership with the European Commission, and strengthening the competitiveness of Europe as a whole. EUREKA is set to play an ever more important role, especially given its focus on market oriented, business driven, bottom-up research and innovation, with practical results which make a difference to people’s lives.
Hungary is delighted to take over the chairmanship of the EUREKA programme at this exciting and challenging point in time. Following the successes of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, we welcome the opportunity to build on the work we have undertaken during the past year, nurturing a culture of innovation in Europe.
Our priorities are framed by the Strategic Roadmap agreed in 2010. Within this, we are committed to increasing the capacity of EUREKA to supporting the full innovation cycle, ensuring the research bears fruit and makes an impact by bringing new products and services to market. We are prioritising positioning EUREKA as taking a lead in supporting cross border research and innovation, further strengthening and exploring new institutional opportunities for international cooperation. International cooperation will be complemented by a focus on promoting innovation within all the regions of Europe. The Eurostars programme, and its successes to date, offers opportunities for further developing the innovation potential and capacity of small and medium sized business in Europe.
This brochure provides an introduction to the Hungarian chairmanship of EUREKA, and we look forward to contributing to the success of EUREKA.
