„Pollutant pathways and mitigation strategies of their impact on the ecosystems” - International Workshop

It is our pleasure to invite you to attend the next Workshop organized in framework of the Scientific Network of Excellence „Pathways of pollutants and mitigation strategies of their impact on the ecosystems”, to be held in Kazimierz Dolny, an old beautiful town located on the bank of the Vistula River, on 16-19 September, 2007.

Research on pollutants migration in the environment is carried out in many centres in Europe and all over the world. However, because of the scientific specialisation, most centres deal only with some aspects of the problem, such as one type of pollutants or one environmental compartment. A more holistic approach is needed, as we live in the environment composed of closely bounded compartments, where a number of different substances of biotic and abiotic origin have been released and thus synergistic effects should be considered.

There are two equally important problems related to the issue:

1. Good understanding of pathways of pollutant in the environment;
2. Identification of the crucial points where the effort on mitigation will give the highest effect.

There is a need to develop an international and interdisciplinary forum for wide cooperation and formulation of the concept of scientific research aiming to eliminating gaps and to summarize the existing knowledge.

History

To meet these challenges, the Thematic Network of Excellence Pollutant pathways and mitigation strategies of their impact on the ecosystems, was establish formally in 2004, based on the previous co-operation between leading Polish institutions in the field of environmental engineering and environmental chemistry. Since then, Network developed into international one and at present gathers 19 institutions from 8 countries all over world.

Every year the Network organizes scientific workshops, which serve as a forum of exchanging views, generating new ideas and projects of common interests and dissemination of knowledge.

The first meeting was held on September 12-14, 2004 and was internal Polish event gathering charter members. The workshop output was published as a volume “Pathways of pollutants and mitigation strategies of their impact on the ecosystems”, by Polish Academy of Sciences in its prestigious serie of monographs of Committee of Environmental Engineering.

Second workshop, held on July 7-10, 2005, gathers abut 50 participants from different EU countries. Post-conference proceeding was published as special volume of international journal “Environmental Engineering Science”.

Third workshop, held on September 17-20, 2006 was focused on: Pathways of pollutants from landfills and sludge processing to air and water-soil systems and mitigation strategies of their impact on the ecosystems”. Post-conference proceeding is under editing by International Publisher House Francis&Taylor.

Now, we would like to invite you again to visit Poland and beautiful renaissance town on Vistula River bank – Kazimierz Dolny in September 2007.

The aim of the incoming workshop is creation a forum for discussion and development of scientific potential concerning mechanisms of pollutants formation, migration from sources to air (indoor and outdoor) and water – soil systems, and mitigation processes by which emissions of pollutants to the environment may be reduced.

Papers presented during workshop, after peer review, will be published in international journal (with IF) –Archives of Environmental Protection.

The deadline for paper abstract is June 1. The deadline for full text submission will be August 30, 2007. Details about form of text will be sent in circular 2, by the end of May.

There is no participation fee.
